Meaning and background
The story behind Mafia
Mafia is a modern English borrowing of an Italian and Sicilian term associated with organised criminal networks, especially in Sicily. A historical etymology reference warns that its earliest sources and possible earlier Arabic connections are disputed. Naming a dog Mafia may carry a comic or ironic tough-guy tone, but the term also describes real-world crime and should not be given a fabricated positive character meaning. Its history belongs to the word, not a traditional personal name.
