Meaning and background
The story behind Magnificent
Magnificent is an English adjective for something impressive or splendid. Oxford traces it through French to a Latin form meaning “making great”, based on *magnus*, “great”. Used as a dog name, it is deliberately extravagant: considerably longer to call than Mag or Magnus, but instantly intelligible as a compliment. The ordinary dictionary meaning is solid evidence, whereas any suggestion that it reveals a dog’s character would be pure invention.
