Meaning and background
The story behind Maiden
Maiden is an English vocabulary choice with deep roots in Old English *mægden*. Historically it referred to a girl or unmarried young woman; later the adjective developed the sense of something happening for the first time, as in a maiden voyage. The present-day word may sound poetic, but those older social meanings deserve acknowledging. As a dog’s name its two syllables are clear without pretending it was originally a personal name.
