Meaning and background

The story behind Maize

Maize is a straightforward English plant-word name for the cereal also called corn, rather than an old personal name. English borrowed the word in the sixteenth century through Spanish *maíz* from an Indigenous Caribbean name, recorded as Arawakan *mahiz*. Its sound is the same as “maze”, though the words do not have the same history. A golden-coloured coat might suggest it, but that would be an owner’s modern association, not its etymology.

Meaning
English noun for the cereal crop Zea mays, also called corn. Source
Origin
Borrowed into English from Spanish maíz, itself from an Arawakan Caribbean form recorded as mahiz. Source
