Meaning and background
The story behind Malanga
Malanga is the Spanish Caribbean and Latin American name of a tropical aroid plant and its starchy edible tuber. The Dictionary of Americanisms describes an Indigenous Antillean origin for the word and notes that the tuber must be cooked; raw material is poisonous. That is a useful cultural and botanical association, not a suggestion to feed the plant to a dog. Its three spoken syllables make it an unusual but recognisable food-word name.
