Meaning and background
The story behind Mallory
Mallory moved into modern English given-name use from a surname with an Old French root generally interpreted as “unfortunate”. The historical gloss reflects the surname’s origin; it does not predict anything about the luck of a dog called Mallory. The name was also heard on the American television programme *Family Ties*, which helped popularise its given-name use. Its three syllables feel more formal than the shorter alternatives Molly or Mal.
