Meaning and background
The story behind Mazel
Mazel has a clear meaning in Jewish English and Yiddish usage: luck or fortune. It appears in mazel tov, an expression of congratulation rather than ordinarily a wish that future events go well. The identical letters also occur in several unrelated European surnames, including an English Maisey variant and a Ukrainian occupational derivation. That makes its use as a dog's name understandable without collapsing all of these histories into one origin.
