Meaning and background
The story behind Mcnally
McNally has at least two historically recorded Irish Gaelic histories. One derives from Mac an Fhailghigh, traditionally interpreted as the son of a poor man; another, particularly in Ulster and Dublin, may represent Mac Con Uladh, which includes a reference to the hound of Ulster. These are alternative surnames that converged in English spelling. For a dog the canine imagery is interesting, but not applicable to every McNally line.
