Meaning and background
The story behind Meme
Meme is a modern English word for an idea, image or joke that spreads by copying, particularly online. It was coined in the 1970s with inspiration from Greek mimēma, something imitated. As a dog's name it evokes contemporary internet culture and is normally one syllable, pronounced meem. This English word should not be confused with French mémé, a distinct accented form with a different meaning and sound.
