Meaning and background
The story behind Mia
Mia is a widely used short form of Maria in several European languages. In Italian it happens to coincide with the feminine word for “mine”, but that coincidence is not the universal derivation of the personal name. Mia is also a South Asian family surname with a different history, illustrating the need to distinguish names from similar words. As a dog's call-name its two open syllables are uncomplicated and easy to recognise.
