Meaning and background
The story behind Monaco
Monaco has an Italian surname history apart from its famous geographical association. The Dictionary of American Family Names derives it from monaco, monk, through either a nickname for monk-like habits or appearance or work as a monastery servant. The explanation therefore does not require that every bearer was a monk. A dog named for a family surname and one named for a travel destination may carry different stories under the same spelling.
