The story behind Monterey
Monterey has a detailed California place-name history in the U.S. Army's account of its presidio. The account says Sebastián Vizcaíno named the bay in 1602 in honor of the Count of Monterrey, then viceroy of New Spain. It also describes the fort and mission established beside the bay in 1770. For a dog, Monterey can preserve a personal coastal connection; the historical account supports that place reference rather than a general personal-name translation.
