Meaning and background
The story behind Mugi
Mugi is a Japanese grain word with a broader range than either wheat or barley alone. Christopher K. Schmidt’s Japanese vocabulary in the World Loanword Database gives the written form 麦 and includes wheat, barley, rye and oats. It distinguishes more specific terms such as komugi for wheat and ōmugi for barley. For a food- or field-inspired dog name, that breadth matters: Mugi should not automatically receive one narrow grain translation. The lexical entry concerns the word, while a personal-name use may have a different written explanation.
