Meaning and background
The story behind Nelly
Nelly is a diminutive of Nell and of other names containing nel, with use recorded in English, Swedish, French and German. The English Nell has a medieval history as a familiar form of Eleanor, Ellen or Helen. One proposed explanation is a shift from the affectionate phrase mine El to my Nel. That possibility is part of Nell’s history, while Nelly’s broader use means no single longer name must be assumed.
