Meaning and background
The story behind Neptune
Neptune has a clear mythological and astronomical identity even though the older name’s literal meaning is uncertain. It comes from Latin Neptunus, the Roman sea god, and also names the eighth planet. A proposed ancient wetness or cloud root remains only a proposal. For a dog, an owner might prefer either an ocean story or a space theme. State that association directly; the recognisable name does not need a confident translation to support it, and it says nothing about swimming ability.
