Octavia is a Roman name built from the same name family as Octavius and the Latin word for 'eighth'. Ancient bearers include Octavia Minor, sister of the emperor Augustus. The historical link explains the name without claiming that a dog so named must be an eighth arrival. Its four-syllable form is elegant but quite different in rhythm from the brisk number-name Octo.
