Meaning and background
The story behind Oisín
Oisín is an Irish personal name with an unusually well-attested literal history: the older elements give 'little deer'. In Irish legend Oisín is a poet and warrior, the son of Fionn mac Cumhaill. It is normally spoken quite differently from its spelling in English, so preserving the accent and recognising the Irish pronunciation matters more than trying to Anglicise every letter. The mythological connection is separate from the word's diminutive meaning.
