Meaning and background
The story behind Orbit
Orbit now most often suggests a planet or satellite travelling around another body, but its linguistic history began on the ground. Latin *orbita* referred to the track or rut of a wheel, and the astronomical sense developed later. The movement reference is real, rather than a promise that a dog called Orbit will be energetic. Its two syllables give the abstract scientific word an accessible call-name shape.
