Meaning and background
The story behind Ore
Ore is a mining word for naturally occurring material from which a valuable metal or mineral can be extracted. It should not be confused with a word that simply means 'gold': ore may contain iron, copper or many other useful substances. The English form has a complicated Old English history involving related metal and mineral terms. Its one syllable is economical, but the meaning is practical rather than mystical.
