Meaning and background
The story behind Orson
Orson means more than its familiar literary and film associations. It grew out of a Norman French nickname based on *ors*, bear, with a diminutive ending, ultimately from Latin *ursus*. Orson Welles is a famous twentieth-century bearer, but he is not the reason the name originally existed. That older 'little bear' history is an appealing example of a name with a genuinely documented animal connection.
