Meaning and background

The story behind Orville

Orville was not originally an ancient French name with a settled definition. Naming references attribute its invention to the eighteenth-century novelist Fanny Burney; 'golden city' has been suggested as an intended French-style meaning, but that intention is unproven. The aviation pioneer Orville Wright gave it another strong historical association much later. Both stories are useful, provided literary invention and speculative translation remain clearly distinguished.
