Meaning and background
The story behind Panda
Panda is an animal name that now usually brings the black-and-white giant panda to mind. The English word first referred to the red or lesser panda and entered through French, apparently from a Himalayan or Nepalese local name. That borrowing history is more precise than treating the animal name as an ancient Chinese personal name. Panda makes a recognisable nature-based choice, but its zoological origin is separate from any dog's appearance.
