Meaning and background
The story behind Petey
Petey has a direct canine film association through the Our Gang comedy shorts, later shown on television as The Little Rascals. The American Kennel Club identifies Lucenay's Peter as one dog who played Petey and explains that he succeeded his father, Pal the Wonder Dog. The familiar eye-ring appeared on opposite sides on the two animals. This gives the name a specific dog-star reference, rather than a dictionary explanation of the nickname's origin.
