Meaning and background

The story behind Pooh

Pooh is strongly associated with the fictional bear Winnie-the-Pooh in A. A. Milne’s books. The Royal Literary Fund explains a rather specific naming history: Christopher Robin had first used 'Pooh' for a swan, and that name later passed to the bear. This is a much sounder account than claiming it is simply another spelling of Poo. Its single, soft syllable stands on its own as a call name.
