Meaning and background
The story behind Poppins
Poppins is most familiar as the surname of the fictional nanny Mary Poppins, introduced by P. L. Travers and later portrayed in Disney’s film. However, the name also exists as a real, rare English surname, for which a surname dictionary proposes a relationship to Toppin. A naming guide admits it does not know how Travers devised her character’s surname. These contexts must be kept separate rather than inventing a translation such as 'one who pops in'.
