Meaning and background
The story behind Porgy
Porgy has two distinct established references. It is an English name for several kinds of sea fish, and it is the title character of DuBose Heyward’s novel Porgy and the subsequent Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess. A word history for the fish is not automatically the origin of the literary character’s name. The rounded two-syllable sound works as a dog name, but the intended association cannot be read from spelling alone.
