Meaning and background
The story behind Port
Port has several unrelated uses in English: a harbour or town where vessels load, the left side of a ship when facing forwards, an opening in machinery or computing, and a fortified Portuguese wine. Dictionaries identify different word histories behind some of these senses. For a dog, Port is short and practical but the intended image remains unknowable without context. The meaning should not be simplified into just 'harbour' as though no other uses existed.
