Meaning and background
The story behind Portland
Portland is a place-name shared by several locations, including the American cities in Maine and Oregon and the Isle of Portland in Dorset. The Oregon city was named for Portland, Maine, following an 1845 coin toss between rival choices, according to the Oregon Historical Society. That modern naming story is documented, but it does not determine which Portland a dog owner might be honouring. The original spelling should remain one geographical proper name, not a forced literal translation.
