Meaning and background
The story behind Prancer
Prancer has both an ordinary English formation and a particular Christmas association. Someone or something that prances moves with showy or high, springing steps; in a published edition of A Visit from St. Nicholas, Prancer is one of Santa's eight named reindeer. Those two references reinforce each other without proving how a modern dog acquired its name. The word has an energetic sound, but it cannot establish the pet's disposition.
