Meaning and background
The story behind Princeton
Princeton is recognised as a New Jersey town and the university that took its name. Princeton's municipal history documents the town in the eighteenth century; the institution was renamed Princeton University in 1896 after its earlier life as the College of New Jersey. Despite the tempting shape 'prince's town', the original place-name derivation is not securely established by those references. As a dog name it can evoke a specific American place rather than a claimed ancestral meaning.
