Meaning and background
The story behind Prissy
Prissy has two rather different histories to keep apart. As an English nickname it is a documented familiar form of Priscilla. As an everyday adjective, however, prissy describes excessive primness or fussiness, and dictionaries give a separate, probably twentieth-century formation involving prim and sissy. Neither origin proves that a dog is fastidious. The name's friendly final vowel sound belongs to its nickname use, while the adjective may introduce an unintended comic echo.
