Meaning and background
The story behind Queens
Queens has a specific New York geographical and historical association. Historian Katie Uva's account for the Gotham Center explains that Queens County was established in 1683 and named in reference to Catherine of Braganza, then Queen of England. That gives the spelling a clearer background than a general promise of regal personality. A dog called Queens may commemorate the borough or a personal New York connection; the place-name account is separate from personal-name etymology.
