Meaning and background
The story behind Rude
Rude has older rough or unfinished senses behind its familiar meaning of discourteous. The English word came through French and Latin, while the deeper etymology remains disputed. An owner may use it as an affectionate joke, but other listeners can hear the criticism before learning the story. That makes everyday introductions a useful test of the choice. It should not be offered as evidence that a dog behaves badly, and the joke may feel different when used on formal bookings or identification.
