Meaning and background
The story behind Rudolph
Rudolph is an English form of German Rudolf in Behind the Name’s reference. The entry dates its import into English use to the nineteenth century and separately identifies Robert L. May’s 1939 Christmas character, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. A family name and a holiday-story tribute are therefore different documented inspirations. The fictional reindeer is a later association, rather than the origin or literal meaning of the inherited personal name.
