Meaning and background
The story behind Salem
Salem has two well-attested name histories. In Arabic it can represent سالم, a form associated with being safe or sound. In modern English it can instead come from the biblical place-name Shalem, linked to completion and peace, and familiar through town names. Those traditions are not interchangeable merely because both render as Salem. The spelling therefore deserves a dual-origin explanation rather than one definitive translated label.
