Meaning and background
The story behind Saratoga
Saratoga is a place-name associated especially with Saratoga County and the historic battles fought in New York during the American Revolution. The county historian traces the name to a Mohawk form, Sarach-togue, but records two different proposed English renderings: “hillside of a great river” and “place of swift water”. Those alternatives make a single confident translation inappropriate. It is primarily an established American geographical name.
