Meaning and background
The story behind Scouts
Scouts is the plural of scout, referring to people sent to observe or explore and to members of Scouting organisations. It can also be read as an ordinary inflected form of the verb. This grammatical background is more defensible than treating the final s as evidence of a different historical name. The familiar one-syllable sound can function as a nickname; however, the original record cannot reveal whether its owner intended the plural, a club association or something else.
