Meaning and background
The story behind Sequoia
Sequoia is a botanical name best known for towering redwood trees. A commonly repeated explanation says the genus honours Sequoyah, creator of the Cherokee syllabary, but the Natural History Museum notes that the botanist who introduced the name did not record his reason. The later tribute story is therefore not established. The tree association is secure, while any claimed direct eponym should be visibly qualified.
