Meaning and background

The story behind Seth

Seth is a name with two separate ancient uses. In the Hebrew Bible, Seth is a son of Adam and Eve; his name comes from Hebrew meaning placed or appointed. An Egyptian deity also appears in English as Seth or Set, via a different linguistic tradition whose original meaning is uncertain. Combining the two into one neat origin would be incorrect, so both are distinguished in the proposed entry.

Origin
Hebrew biblical name Sheth (“placed, set”); separate Egyptian mythological Seth/Set has a different, uncertain etymology. Source
