Meaning and background
The story behind Shell
Shell has two defensible routes that should not be merged. As an English word it names the hard covering of many animals or the casing of an object; as a personal nickname it can shorten Shelley or Sheldon. Both are familiar, but a catalogue entry spelling alone cannot tell which inspired a particular dog. Its short, distinct sound is a usable editorial observation, not evidence of etymology.
