Meaning and background
The story behind Slate
Slate is a fine-grained stone that can split into thin sheets, long used for roofing and writing surfaces. The word also names a grey colour. As a dog name it therefore carries material and colour associations without proving the animal’s appearance. It is one syllable, and should not be confused with Slater, the separate occupational surname derived from slate work.
