Meaning and background
The story behind Tampa
Tampa takes its recognisable modern spelling from the Florida city and bay. The Tampa Bay History Center traces early records to the form Tanpa but explicitly says the original word’s meaning is unknown. In particular, the often-repeated “sticks of fire” translation lacks historical evidence. Tampa makes a distinctive place-inspired dog name without needing that invented gloss.
