Meaning and background
The story behind Tonka
Tonka has two quite different documented associations. In Slovene and Croatian it is a diminutive of the personal name Antonia. Separately, Tonka became the name of American toy trucks, a brand whose makers traced it to nearby Lake Minnetonka. These histories should not be fused into an invented translation such as “strong”. As a dog name, either association may appeal.
- Origin
- Slovene and Croatian diminutive of Antonia; separately the Tonka toy brand was named with reference to Lake Minnetonka. Source
