Meaning and background
The story behind Trapani
Trapani is a coastal city in north-western Sicily, with a name that goes back to the Greek *Drepanon*. An older Treccani encyclopaedia suggests a link to the sickle-like curve of the land on which the city stands, but presents that explanation cautiously. The place-name connection is certain; treating 'sickle' as an unquestionable personal-name translation would overstate the evidence.
