Meaning and background
The story behind Tupac
Tupac is a historical spelling related to the Quechua name *Tupaq*, which appears in accounts of Inca rulers and the eighteenth-century leader Túpac Amaru II. A Quechua–Spanish dictionary gives *tupaq* an adjectival sense including 'noble' or 'exalted', while also listing other grammatical uses. The spelling became widely familiar through rapper Tupac Shakur. Those different histories should not be collapsed into a single modern personal attribute.
