Meaning and background
The story behind Ulric
Ulric has two historically relevant name routes. An edited name dictionary calls it a Middle English form of Old English Wulfric, whose elements mean 'wolf' and 'ruler'. In modern use Ulric is usually treated instead as a variant of German Ulrich, whose older elements point to heritage and rulership. The difference matters: a blanket translation of Ulric as 'wolf ruler' would misdescribe some modern uses.
