Meaning and background
The story behind Uni
Uni is particularly ambiguous in Roman letters. In everyday British English it is the familiar abbreviation for university, pronounced YOO-nee. A separate Japanese word *uni* refers to the sea urchin, familiar in Japanese food. The Latin-derived prefix *uni-* also indicates one, but that does not prove a given name means 'one'. These are independent linguistic associations, so the spelling cannot responsibly be assigned just one origin.
