Meaning and background
The story behind Utah
Utah takes its name from a western American state. The Utah Division of State History says that the state is named after the Ute people, an Indigenous nation. State information pages also repeat differing explanations of the older word's literal translation, so 'people of the mountains' should not be advertised as an unquestionable dog-name meaning. The secure association here is geographical and historical rather than a personal-name tradition.
