Meaning and background

The story behind Wendy

Wendy was made widely familiar by J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, first staged in 1904. The playwright's version was connected with a child's nickname fwendy, meaning 'friend', but the name had rare earlier use and may also relate to Welsh Gwendolen. It is therefore not quite accurate to say Barrie invented every occurrence of Wendy. Its two syllables make it a recognisable standalone call.

Origin
A given name widely popularised by J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan (1904); his form reflected “fwendy” (“friend”), but rare earlier uses may relate to Gwendolen. Source
