Meaning and background
The story behind West
West is the compass direction in which the sun sets, making it a clear geographical word name. It can also appear as a surname, but the ordinary direction is the most straightforward association for a standalone English word. Its single syllable makes it spare rather than elaborate. There is no reason to treat it as an ancient personal name meaning courage, freedom or any other unsupported quality.
